Some of the required materials for your course are also required for the corequisite courses, BIO 240 and BIO 243, and so may not be listed as "required" for this course in the SCC Bookstore.

Objectives

This course provides learning opportunities that complement those in the Anatomy & Physiology 1 lecture and lab courses. Students are introduced to specific success strategies and apply them directly to the concepts of the A&P curriculum concurrently with their introduction in the lecture and lab courses in a supportive small group setting. Participation in this supplemental course will:

 

Corequisites

This course must be taken along BIO 240 Anatomy & Physiology 1, which in turn must be taken along with BIO 243 Anatomy & Physiology 1 Laboratory. You must be enrolled in BOTH of these courses. If you drop either of these corequisite courses, then you must drop all three courses.

There are two primary websites you will need to access in this course:

There is an online version of this syllabus on the internet at http://www.lionden.com/ap1-supp.htm The online syllabus, which serves as the OFFICIAL document for this course, will occasionally be updated if necessary. Notes and other required information is also located only on the course website.  Online Check-ins and the grade roster (grade book) are available on Moodle (see below). Therefore, all students must have access to the internet and an internet browser. Your friendly and helpful SCC library reference specialist will help you with this, as will the science specialist in the ACE Center.

Moodle is a separate website that allows us to post online check-ins, individual grade records, and other resources on the internet. To login to your course go to moodle.stchas.edu. At the Moodle entry page, note the help buttons that include instructions on how to login. Fill in your login credentials and click the Login button.  In "Courses Available to You" fnd and click on the course title within the current term (if you see TWO BIO 242 courses, click on the META course).

You can also enroll in a self-study A&P Online web course at the Evolve site. Just use the access code that comes with your textbook (or purchase it online if you have a used book without a valid code). Be sure to sign up for the "self study" version, not the version led by an instructor.

computerComputers with high-speed internet access are available to ALL students in the ACE Center and LRC. Laptops with wireless access may also be checked out and used in the LRC. If you do not have home access to these resources, please make time to be on campus to use them.

 

Classroom Sessions

We do not have a set schedule for this course. The online Notes page will be updated frequently to let you now what's ahead . . . and what you need to prepare for each session.

We'd like to keep the topics and activities of these sessions flexible so that we can meet your needs as they arise—and as the needs of the group change.

Student Preparation

Before coming to a session, you should

Student Response System

In each session we will be using a student response system called i>clicker.  You must purchase an individual remote unit and bring it with you to every class meeting.  Remote units may not be shared. Details on how to use the remote unit are found at the Student Response section in the Lion Den Study Tips.

When you respond during class with your i>clicker unit, you will accumulate "clicker" points that will earn you attendance/participation points that will later be added into your course grade.  You will not be scored on whether the responses are correct or incorrect.

The think of the clickers as your professional tools . . . you can't do the job if you don't have your tools with you!

Missed sessions

You should attend other sections of A & P 1 Supplement taught by the same instructor to catch up with sessions that you have missed, if possible.  See the Attendance section later in this syllabus for more on attendance policies. (NOTE: In some semesters, there may be only ONE section of this course offered.)

 

Assignments

Assignments are given at the discretion of the instructor. There are no tests or quizzes (except practice tests) given in this course.  

Reading assignments are not graded and receive no points, but you will find that skipping them will make it hard to follow what we're doing in each session. However, you may lose session participation points if you are not well prepared for each session.

Online Check-ins

Before coming to your weekly session you must go online and complete a brief "Check-in." Online Check-ins are done on Moodle in the form of a quiz.

The Check-in will ask a few questions about how you are doing and what strategies you are using to succeed in the lecture and lab sections of A&P. A sample Check-in is distrubuted during the first course session.

The point value you get on the Check-in "quiz" is based on whether you respond to the items—not the content of your response. No matter how many items you "check" in the Check-in, the maximum points recorded in the Moodle gradebook is 15 (that is, up to one point for each Check-in question). These points will count toward your course grade.

After submitting each Check-in, please print it out and add it to your course notebook/portfolio.

DO NOT complete check-ins or assignments while texting or talking on your cell phone. You could have an accident!

Assignments

Assignments are made in each session and listed in the online Notes page. You should complete the assignments due BEFORE coming to class.

Assignments are not individually graded. However, they do count toward your class participation points. Failure to adequately complete an assignment could result in the loss of participation points. Because your assignments go in your notebook/portfolio, failure to do assignments may also affect your notebook/portfolio grade.

Notebook/Portfolio

You must keep a portfolio of your work in the course. This can be a three-ring binder/notebook/folder (or equivalent) containing all your check-in printouts, handouts, and assignments—and bring it with you to each class session. The instructor may occassionally ask to see your notebook/portfolio contents. Be sure your name and contact information is on it!

Bring your complete notebook/portfolio to the last class session, where we will assess them in peer groups. Each member of the peer group will give a score to all the notebooks/portfolios in the group based on the grading rubric below (including their own). The instructor will consider these scores, along with the instructor's own assessment, in assigning the grade for the notebook/portfolio.

Here is the proposed breakdown of the 730 available course points for this course:

Course grades are assigned at the discretion of the instructor. The grading scheme is outlined in the box.

A = 90% to 100%
B = 80% to 89.9%
C = 70% to 79.9%
D = 60% to 69.9%
F = 0% to 59.9%

If the total available course points is 730, then at least 90% of 730 points, which is 657 points, are required for an A in the course.  Extra credit points will be added to your points but not to the total available. 

It is your responsibility to keep a running total of your grades. Grades will be posted in the gradebook at the Moodle site for this course (described above).  Grades cannot be given out over the phone or by email in most circumstances. The official course grades are posted by the Registrar at SCC Connection (www.stchas.edu/scc-connection.php).  Please check SCC Connection and investigate any possible errors or discrepancies immediately.

Note: Your "midterm" course grade is based on your work reported through Week 6. Only grades D and F are reported to the Registrar. The midterm grades are "progress reports" and are not reported on your final course grade or transcript.

 

Critical Thinking

The science faculty strives to facilitate each learner's development of critical thinking skills in the context of each science course. Critical thinking skills include "higher order" types of thinking abilities such as synthesis, evaluation, problem-solving, application, and so on. That is, using both new and old knowledge beyond simple memorization of facts. In this course, expect this kind of thinking to be modeled in lectures, demonstrations, and readings, practiced in classroom discussions, and self-study activities.

 

Extra Credit

As you noticed in the grading scheme above, 45 points will be deducted from the course total to account for missing one class session. This means that you can miss one class and still earn the maximum number of points. If you attend all the class sessions, you could earn MORE points than the course total. These extra points, then, are "extra credit."

Of course, any extra points will offset any clicker points that you miss because you forgot your clicker, or any deduction of points you get for inadequate assignments or class preparation.

There are ordinarily no other opportunites (for example, no extra projects) for extra credit in this course.

 

Extra Help

If you need extra help with the concepts of Anatomy and Physiology, then you may seek the help of your instructor.  Office hours for each instructor are available from the department secretary (Vicki) in Room 2442 or on the doors of individual faculty offices.  In addition my office hours are available at this link Kevin's Schedule. Other instructors in the Life Science department may also be able to help you. The science specialist and others in the  ACE Center can often help you.  For help in general study habits and test taking, we strongly recommend that you seek help from the regular staff of the ACE Center —especially their handouts and lunchtime seminars on study skills.  I also have some study tips available online.

If you have any problems with the course or the instructor, SCC policy dictates that you must seek help from your instructor/course director first. If the problem is still not resolved, then you can bring your problem to the appropriate Dean (Dr. John Bookstaver) for final disposition. 

If you decide to drop the course, PLEASE see the instructor first. In any event, you must officially withdraw at the registration office by Oct 26 to receive a "W" grade.  If you just stop showing up to class without officially withdrawing, you will receive the "F" grade. The last day to change to/from "audit" status is Sep 14.

Please get individual help outside of classroom time.
This includes forms to be signed by the instructor.

Attendance & Class Behavior

Participation in class meetings is essential. Absences in excess of the equivalent of two weeks of class meetings will affect your grade.  Students are responsible for catching up on material covered in missed or cancelled sessions.

Students are expected to be prepared for each class.  Check the online course information frequently for topics and assignments.  Be aware that sometimes we get a little ahead of posted activities and sometimes we get a little behind—so prepare accordingly.

Breakage of equipment or careless handling of lab or classroom furniture/materials may result in the assessment of a repair/replacement fee. 

NO DRINKS OR FOOD ARE PERMITTED IN THE CLASSROOM. This is a college policy, not mine!

Also banned from the class are:

  • laser pointers (except when giving a presentation)

  • weapons of any kind (even if legally carried)

  • all illegal substances

Academic Integrity

This course is founded on the principle that all who participate will do so with the honesty befitting adult, professional studies.  Without integrity of all students, the integrity of the course, this school, and your own credentials all suffer. This means that all students are expected to submit only their own work, whether for assignments, papers, online tests or quizzes, in-class tests or quizzes, classroom response system (clickers), or any other component of this course.  Thus, students may not receive inappropriate help nor give inappropriate help to other students.  

SCC academic integrity policy outlined in the SCC Student Handbook stipulates a variety of possible outcomes of violation of principles of basic academic integrity.  In this course, receiving or giving inappropriate help in online tests, in-class exams, or assignments will ordinarily result in receiving "F" for the course.  Inappropriate help may include having someone do all or or part of the work for you, providing or receiving copies of current in-class exam items or answers to in-class exam items, and copying someone else's work and submitting it as your own.  Students who witness or have reason to suspect violations of academic integrity in this course and do not report it promptly, thus further enabling the dishonestly, will themselves also be subject to disciplinary action.

Student Understanding

You are required to complete the Student Understanding, which outlines your responsibilities as a learner, on Moodle as soon as possible.  You will not be allowed to do the Moodle online Check-ins until you complete the Student Understanding by checking "I understand" for each of the items.  Click here for a list of the items in the Student Understanding.

Although a "score" is shown for the Student Understanding, these points are not counted toward your total course grade.
